본 연구는 1920년대 후반부터 1930년대 초까지 추진된 경성 지역 여자소비조합의 사례를 분석하여 여성들의 경제적 연대와 그 특징을 검토하였다. 일제하에 설립된 최소 500개 이상의 민간 협동조합 중 최소 16개 이상은 여성이 주도하여, 여성만으로 구성된 소비자협동조합이었다. 여성들은 협동조합을 조직하여 물가와 소비 문제를 공동 대응하고자 하였고, 사회경제에 여성이 직접 참여하며 소비자의 단결을 도모했다. 여성들은 개별적으로 상품을 구매하는 단일 소비자를 넘어, 품질 좋은 상품을 저렴하게 구매하기 위하여 결사체를 구성하고 직접 매장을 개설하였다. 경성 지역에서는 여학생소비조합, 경성여자소비조합, 조선여자소비조합이 추진되었으며, 이 중 경성여자소비조합과 조선여자소비조합은 여성 조합원 100명 이상 모여 매장 운영, 사업 및 지역사회를 위한 활동을 전개하였다. 경성 지역 여성의 소비조합운동 특징은 다섯 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 식민 지배하에서 사회경제 활동에 여성이 직접 참여하여 소비 문제를 해결하고자 하였다. 둘째, 지식인 여성뿐 아니라 여학생, 주부, 직업여성 등 참여자의 폭이 넓었다. 셋째, 세계 협동조합 역사를 비교하여 살펴보면 피식민지 여성들이 주도하고 여성만으로 구성하여 운영된 이례적인 사례였다. 넷째, 여성단체의 조직적 사업 또는 대응을 넘어 소비 문제에 초점을 맞춰 개별 조직을 구성하여 사업을 추진하였다. 다섯째, 소비조합을 통해 사업 운영에 직접 참여함으로써 여성운동의 범위가 확대되는 양상을 보여주었다.

This study examines women's economic solidarity and progress through the formation of women's consumer cooperatives in the Gyeongseong from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. Of the more than 500 private cooperatives established under Japanese rule, at least 16 were women-led, women-only consumer cooperatives. Women collectively tried to solve price and consumption problems through consumer cooperatives, a process that allowed them to directly participate in the social economy and unite women consumers. The development of these women's consumer cooperatives has been characterized by five features. First, they sought to solve the problem of consumption under colonial rule by directly engaging women in socioeconomic activities. Second, they included a wide range of participants, not only intellectual women but also schoolgirls, housewives, and professional women. Third, a comparative review of the world's cooperative history shows that this was an unusual case, led by colonized women and organized and run by women only. Fourth, it was not a response organized by a women's organization but rather an individual initiative focused on consumption issues and business promotion. Fifth, the direct participation of women in business operations through consumer cooperatives demonstrated the expanding scope of the women's movement.
